The Flatirons are iconic to Boulder and a lot of families want their portrait sessions at Chautauqua Park. This location, however, isn’t as busy because it’s not directly in front of the Flatirons. So you’ll be able to get the Flatirons in your photos, but you don’t have to deal with the crowds.
When is the best time of day to take photos in this spring location?
Normally, I love having portrait sessions during the “golden hour” which is one hour before session. That is usually around 7:15-7:45 pm in June/July, which can be rough for families with little ones. However, due to the proximity of this location to the mountains, I started this session at 6:00pm before the sun dipped behind the Flatirons. We still got beautiful light, but didn’t have to go too far into the witching hour for the little guy. Happy baby = happy parents.
Late spring and early summer (May through mid-July) is perfect time for your family portrait session in Boulder, Colorado. It is one of my favorite times for outdoor family lifestyle portrait sessions! The weather is prefect for frolicking through the fields, and you don’t have to worry about your looking like you came out of the pool or cranky heat exhausted kids during your session.
